Oh man. Director Robert Altman died this morning at the age of 81.
Of his films — of which, unfortunately, I’ve only seen a small handful — my favorite is probably McCabe & Mrs. Miller…although it’s with some chagrin that I must admit my fondest memories are probably still of Popeye, which I saw a number of times as a child. In fact — and this may be a bad idea, and the film may not stand up under the adult critical eye — but I’ve added it to my Netflix queue.
RIP, Mr. Altman.
I will forever love The Player, which would certainly be in my All-Time Top 50.
I haven’t seen The Player since it was first released on video. It might be time to revisit. (There’s a sequel out now to the original novel, I think.)
With some directors, having seen 7 of their films would seem like a lot. With Altman, I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface.
The Player is among my favorite films, as well, hovering in my top 10, and sometimes occupying the top spot. I wanted to be Griffin Mills so bad when I was 13.
How fucked up is that?
Just a little, yeah. 🙂
I also have fond childhood memories of Popeye. I don’t know about it standing up, but I can say that when viewed with adult eyes, Olive Oyl singing “But he’s large” takes on a whole ‘nuther meaning.
