There is a famous story about Josef Stalin presiding over a contest to create a national monument to Pushkin. Stalin rejected sculptures of Pushkin at his writing table, Pushkin in a birch forest, and Pushkin dancing with gypsies. The sculpture he finally declared the winner was a sculpture of Stalin reading Pushkin.
