So my losing streak with summer blockbuster sequels1 ended today with Ocean’s Thirteen — which, if not quite as good as the original2, is still much better than the misguided Ocean’s Twelve and is a whole lot of fun. I followed up the day’s double-feature with Knocked Up, which is raunchy and funny and sweet, and if there’s any justice in the world will make Seth Rogen and everyone else involved in a much bigger star. Highly recommended.

Oh, but Regal Cinemas? Offering me a free movie ticket as a member of your Regal Crown Club and then telling me I can’t use it for any new movies, i.e. a movie that’s only been out for one or two weeks? Not cool. Especially when movies tend not to stay in your theaters more than a couple of weeks.

1 Not entirely fair. Shrek the Third was sort of boring, but pretty innocuous and even sometimes cute.

2 No, not the original original. The 2001 Ocean’s Eleven.

I guess if I posted more often, it wouldn’t seem like I’d just posted one of these:

  1. “Do It Again” by Tori Amos (orig. Steely Dan), guessed by Kim
You’ll be on your knees tomorrow
  2. “Everybody Needs Somebody” by the Blues Brothers, guessed by Kim
Signify your feelings with every gentle caress
  3. “Speed Racer” theme song, guessed by Kim
    Adventure’s waitin’ just ahead
  4. “It Was a Good Day” by Ice Cube
Didn’t even get no static from the cowards
  5. “The Bear Song” by Green Jelly
You darn fool, you darn fool, can’t you plainly see?
  6. “Portland, Oregon” by Loretta Lynn
If that ain’t love then tell me what is
  7. “They” by Jem
Who made up all the rules?
  8. “Because the Night” by Bruce Springsteen (or others), guessed by Kim
Take me now baby here as I am
  9. “Flashlight Tornado” by Papa M
The deacon blew the cap right off my head
  10. “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” by Pink Floyd, guessed by Betty
Come on you raver, you seer of visions

I did post the remaining answers to last week’s lyrics, if that counts for anything. As always, best of luck!

Michael Moore on his appearance today on Oprah1:

The theme of Oprah’s show is the one film you must see this summer — “Sicko” — and the one book you must read (Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road”). Oprah loved Michael’s film and wants to make health care for all one of her main missions this year.

Well, you know how Oprah likes to give things away to her studio audience…

The other day, a co-worker introduced me to Goodreads. I already use LibraryThing to keep track of the books that I’ve read, but there are a few things I like about this new system — specifically the social interaction element. You can always find plenty of strangers on LibraryThing who have read the same books as you, but Goodreads lets you see what the people you know are reading, and it lets you compare book lists with one another. It also lets you more easily distinguish between the books you’ve already read and the ones that you’re reading now. (Which is why I don’t even include those books on my LT list.) There are things it doesn’t do well, like widgets for instance, but I’m having fun playing around with it. You can add me as a friend if you’d like to sign up, too.
