Tuesday linkpharm, books and words edition:

So far, the ongioing transit strike hasn’t really affected me. My morning commute to work was some thirty or forty minutes longer than usual, since the LIRR added more trains out of Queens, and we crept behind them for much of the way. But other than that it’s been all right. I walk from Penn Station to the office, so I don’t rely on subways or buses, and with any luck I’ll beat the rush of people trying to leave the city this evening. The office is practically empty, as are the streets outside, since NYC is enforcing mandatory car-pooling into Manhattan and turning back cars with less than four people in them. It’s almost peaceful.

Update: Yeah, I may have jinxed myself with that. Getting home wasn’t impossible, but it was definitely more complicated. I think the MTA was doing a decent job of directing people where they needed to go — 7th Avenue and 34th, 8th and 33rd, etc. — but, with the massive number of people needing a train home, some confusion was bound to arise. Luck played at least some part in my catching the right train tonight.
