I know lots of people are putting up Halloween decorations earlier than usual this year (like, oh, starting two or three weeks ago), but there seem to be an awful lot of these seasonal Halloween supply stores. I’m beginning to think they’re some kind of weird front for something.

I knew there was a reason I liked Samantha Morton:
There is a story Samantha Morton tells about when she was a kid going to drama club. After partnering her with another girl, the teacher said, “I’m going to whisper something to you and then you begin the improvisation.” “He whispered, ‘The other girl’s stolen your hamster.’ So I beat the crap out of this girl and they didn’t ask me back.”
It’s an interesting inteview overall. And I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone use the phrase “as mad as a box of frogs” before.

I really loved Robert Charles Wilson’s novel Spin. So how did I miss the fact that there’s a sequel?
Every month of 2007, I’ve made a mix of the new or rediscovered songs I’ve been listening to. Here’s September:
- “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Greg Laswell
- “Ramble Tamble” by Creedence Clearwater Revival
- “The Great Song of Indifference” by Bob Geldof
- “Bring ‘Em Home” by Bruce Springsteen
- “Grace Kelly” by MIKA
- “Click Click Click Click” by Bishop Allen
- “Myriad Harbour” by the New Pornographers
- “Broken Arm” by Winterpills
- “Mudshow” by Krista Detor
- To the Dogs or Whoever” by Josh Ritter
- “Oh My God” by Pink & Peaches
- “White Wedding” by Whip
- “Running Up That Hill” by Placebo
- “Answer” by Sarah McLachlan
I let my self-imposed 12-song limit slide this time to fit in everything. As always, I’ll happily do a one-for-one exchange for a mix of your own.
Okay, so shouldn’t “full screen” actually mean full screen — and not, y’know, just most of the screen (and with very large, distracting advertisements on the rest of it, no less)? And wouldn’t it be nice if it stayed in full screen mode when it went to commercial, or at the very least switched back to it on its own?
So the online player leaves a lot to be desired, but how about the show? Meh. I found it pretty underwhelming, actually. I didn’t have quite the same reaction to it that Abigail Nussbaum did, but she’s not wrong about the lip service paid to female empowerment, even while that very empowerment is being cut off at the knees.
I think I’ll keep watching for now. A pilot, even one for a show not as notoriously troubled behind-the-scenes as this one, isn’t always the best judge of what’s to come. And I like both Michelle Ryan and Miguel Ferrer. But the show will need to work a lot harder than this to win me over.
