You know times are bad when even “Get Fuzzy” starts talking politics.
Month: April 2004
Okay. So, as anybody who’s been paying attention to this weblog can tell you, I’ve essentially set myself two options. (There are certainly others, but narrowing it down to two makes it easier for me.) The first option is to go home to New York. I don’t really want to live there right now, but, since my parents are there, it’s a move that I could afford if I fail to find a job right away. The second option is to go to Austin. There are a lot of things about Texas that frighten me, or that might ultimately make it the wrong choice, but it’s an interesting place I could probably survive for a year, and I could do with a change right about now. However, my resources are limited, I have no family with whom I can live in Texas, so I would need a job. (And it seems unlikely, at this point, that I’m going to secure a job in Austin from Pennsyvlania.) New York is the safest option, and maybe the most sensible. If all that mattered to me was career, that’s where I’d go, in a heartbeat. But career isn’t all that matters to me, and, if my resources weren’t limited, I think Austin’s the option I’d pick right now. If only because it is such a change.
So let’s consider this something of a straw poll. Readers and friends tell me I should quit talking about moving and just do it already. So, in general, what do you think? Should I go back to New York, save money, and concentrate on building my resume? Or should I take a (sizeable) risk, move to Austin, and hope I can find a job on which I can live once I get there? Unless some unexpected third option I can’t refuse comes along in the next week or two, I’m moving to one of these places before the end of July. I’m curious which you think it should be.
For anyone interested, I’ve uploaded the last 5 newsletters to the Monty Python Society website. (And although I’ve been told the format apparently ain’t no damn good, they’re in PDF format.)
The saga of my car repairs is, I know, not much of a saga. Such is my life, though. They finished working on my car today, surprisingly enough, and it’s now back in my possession. I picked it up this afternoon, and while it was a little strange to be fighting rush-hour traffic to get back to the office, this is good.
Incidentally, it’s a beautiful day here. If I’m not careful, I might let weather like this convince me to stay in State College, even though I know it never lasts.
Well, I’m at a loss. Anything you folks want me to write about? I’m open to suggestions.
In the meantime, I’ve uploaded the first two articles I’ve written for Voices of Central Pennsylvania to my writings section. (The article I submitted for the May issue, on Peace Brigades International, obviously hasn’t been printed yet). For March, I wrote Local Youth Plunge Into Politics, and for April I wrote Local Responses to Gay Marriage Developments.
