When I had people sign out books at the beginning of last semester, I think I probably should have had them print their names as well.

I’ve known for awhile that I really should wash the kitchen floor. I just didn’t expect to finally be doing it with suds leaking from my dishwasher. Hopefully I won’t soon also be telling you about how I finally ironed those dress shirts by getting my oven to explode.
Hopefully I can get my dishwasher working again.
Another software question for you unwashed masses out there:
Does anyone know of any free, easy-to-use, decent-quality DOC-to-PDF conversion software? If you sign up with Adobe, they’ll convert five documents online for you in a trial run, but after that it starts to get pricey. What I’m looking to do is convert Monty Python Society newsletters into PDF for easier download. I don’t really want to buy the Acrobat software, and I wonder if there’s anything more convenient than marching over to a computer lab on campus that already has it installed. Quality’s an issue, but free is the operative word.
Just wondering.
Back again, the Friday Five:
- Where are you right now? In my office, at the computer, writing a letter to a gentleman in India about a paper we cannot send him. (Even sending the letter could be tough, since his address, if that’s what it is, doesn’t appear to be in English.)
- What time is it? 10:43, or so says the computer’s clock. It looks like Blogger is at least a minute ahead.
- What are you wearing? Tan pants, brown dress shirt, white t-shirt, brown shoes, black socks, boxer shorts, eyeglasses.
- Any people or animals around you? Describe them. My boss is next door. Accurately describing him might get me into trouble.
- What are your plans for the weekend? I plan to clean my apartment, go grocery shopping, work on the Monty Python Society website, and see Adaptation. That’s about it.
How’s about you?
What do you do when your software outright lies to you? I have two images open in Microsoft Photo Editor right now, which are supposed to be the same height. Photo Editor says they’re the same height, but one is clearly twice as large as the other. One is very clearly not 0.89 inches tall. I don’t much care if it distorts the image — it’s intended as a thumbnail, linked to the larger photo — but it would be nice if it was the same size as all the others. Especially when my software says it already is.
These two images, for instance, are apparently only 0.02 inches apart. Does that look like 0.02 inches’ difference to you?
I’m trying to update the Monty Python Society website, and I’m starting to worry it’s going to take even longer than I expected.
