  • I’ll bet Chelsea Clinton didn’t have wedding invites this adorably geeky. [via]
  • Oh my god! The triceratops may never have existed! That’s so–oh, wait, it might have been the younger form of another dinosaur that looks almost identical except for some cranial features? And, if it is the case that they’re one and the same, palaeontologists will just rename them both triceratops? Wow, what seemed like a stunning revelation is curiously a non-story by paragraph’s end.
  • Syfy Announces Development Slate of 7 New Scripted Projects. Only eighteen of them are Battlestar Galactica or Stargate spinoffs. [via] [Related: Cracked on the Syfy Channel.]
  • I think what I find most interesting and amusing about this whole recent Neil Gaiman/Todd McFarlane thing is that the judge’s decision is ultimately an argument over comics continuity.
  • And finally, as someone who, as part of his day job, spends a great deal of time hunting down potential authors and reviewers at universities, can I just say how right xkcd is?

Ah, Friday

First there was work.

Then there was play.

Summer hours are only fun on Fridays, and even then I’m not entirely sure the trade-off is worth it. But there’s definitely something to be said for getting home at two o’clock in the afternoon instead of six or seven o’clock at night.

I’m not sure I used that time too productively. I went and bought milk, and a few other groceries, and I watched this week’s episode of Burn Notice. I very inexpertly trimmed and separated some lamb chops for dinner for me and my mother. (My father had a Boy Scout dinner, welcoming a visiting troop from Westbury (the original one) in England.) I spent an unexpected amount of time cleaning up broken glass when I accidentally knocked a jar of gravy off a shelf in the garage. (I can’t say I’m a fan of the stuff myself, so I wasn’t exactly broken up about it. I just didn’t want our dog to lick up shards of broken glass.)

And that’s about it. Today was a much nicer day than yesterday, still pretty hot but not as oppressively muggy. Word is, this is the hottest July on record in most parts, and I’ll be happy enough to put the humidity behind me.

Now I think a little capping might be in order.

No Pickle Thursday

So I got a tuna fish sandwich for lunch today, and they asked if I wanted pickles when I was paying for it. I said yes, because, hey, free pickles. But when I got back to the office, there were no pickles to be found in my bag. And because this is the kind of thing that makes the internet go round, I posted it to Twitter. This is what resulted:

Pickles

It got a surprising amount of response over on my Facebook page, too, which is basically just a feed of my Twitter posts I maintain so I can play Scrabble online. Usually I have to post really pedantic grammatical questions to get that kind of response. (Although, in my line of work, that kind of thing comes up a whole lot more often than lack of pickles.)

Anyway, it kept me amused. Today was decent enough for a Thursday, although it was disgustingly hot and muggy, and I’m just glad tomorrow’s a half day.

Wednesday in the weeds

More of the same today, with just a team meeting in the morning to differentiate it from Tuesday. I’m working on a couple of projects at work that involve some elements I haven’t really handled since I was an editorial assistant, so I’m a little outside my comfort zone. But it’s all good. The week is drawing to a close, slowly but surely, and like always I have that half-day on Friday to look forward to.

Oh man, am I ever looking forward to that.
