Four weeks in a row? Golly, I do need weblog filler. Anyway, once again, the Friday Five:
1. Are you going to school this year? No, I graduated in 1999. My parents have been suggesting I might want to consider taking the GRE this year — my sister’s going to be taking it, since she wants to teach and graduate school’s pretty much a necessity — but I’ve never really known what I’d do with a graduate degree. Unlike my sister, I don’t have any great desire to teach. (I also don’t think I’d be very good at it.) A Masters in Creative Writing or MFA emphasis in fiction might be interesting (I’ve been somewhat intrigued by the program at the University of Texas at Austin, for instance), but I don’t want to spend the money on a refresher course, the test, applications, and actual tuition if it’s just to pad my resume out. I am considering it, though.
2. If yes, where are you going (high school, college, etc.)? If no, when did you graduate? In 1999 from Penn State. I graduated with a BA in English. I don’t remember ever officially declaring my creative writing emphasis, but I got a certificate with my diploma saying I did.
3. What are/were your favorite school subjects? Well, um, English. That sort of explains the major, I think. I also very much liked the three Integrative Arts classes I took at Penn State. I’ve always regretted not putting more work into my studies. I’ve also very much regretted never taking an internship.
4. What are/were your least favorite school subjects? My least favorite class at Penn State was probably my Formal Logic course. I think I’m lucky to have managed a D in it. There was also the English class of which I skipped two entire months, but, for the most part, that wasn’t about the material. I still managed a B+ in the course.
5. Have you ever had a favorite teacher? Why was he/she a favorite? My seventh grade English teacher, Mrs. Klatsky. She came in on Halloween dressed as her “evil twin”, a witch, and read us ghost stories. She also made us care about the books we read and papers we wrote.
