So you may be wondering, how’s the 3-day novel writing going? Yeah…it sort of isn’t. I’ve been scribbling a few things throughout the day, but I’ve largely been distracted by goofing off, watching a movie, running errands, and unsuccessfully trying to fix a weird recurring problem on my parents’ computer. I’m happy to see that Heather is making good progress on her novel, but me…well, not so much.

I do like the idea of the contest quite a lot — a “72-hour exile of writer’s block” — but I’m having a real tough time putting it into practice.

What I need to do is get back to writing on a schedule, for a set amount of time every day. That’s the only thing that’s ever worked for me.

  1. Good for you!! Way to go! Even a little bit is a good thing.

I need to get back into a routine, too. There was a time when I was writing 500 words a day, no matter what. It worked really well. I need to get back to that regimen.

  2. Yeah, I’ve seen that, and it’s funny (and probably more than a little true). But NaNoWriMo and 3-Day Novel and the like are not about creating brilliant works of fiction. They’re about ridiculous challenges and forcing yourself through writer’s block. Essentially, they’re just very extended free-writing prompts. They don’t often produce great, or even necessarily good, writing. But they’re not unhelpful at making better writing after the fact.

My feeling has always been, anything that gets writers writing is a good thing.
