I’m not really sure how I feel about recently announced plans for a comic-book sixth season of Angel. On the one hand, I hated when show was cancelled, and I’ll probably pick up anything with Joss Whedon attached to it. But on the other hand, I think I’m one of those fans who do regard the show’s finale as about as perfect an ending as you can get. I almost don’t want to know what happens next.

  1. No opinion on comic book seasons of old shows, but are you picking up Whedon’s Runaways? I’m afraid I’m locked in to the Runaways hardcovers, so I won’t know if it’s any good for another year or two.

  2. I haven’t yet. I’m still trying to get caught up with BKV’s original run on the series. So it’s hardcovers for me, too, I’m afraid. I mostly enjoyed Whedon’s “X-Men” stuff, and he seems to genuinely love “Runaways,” so I’ll definitely pick it up somewhere down the line.

I actually haven’t bought any comics in quite a while. I’m slowly reading some collected stuff — a little BKV here, a little Warren Ellis there — but I feel like I’m missing out on some really good new stuff by relying only on my local library.

  3. I like the ending of it, too. I thought it was perfectly fitting, and contained exactly the right kind of ambiguity.

  4. I’m iffy on it, too, but the Buffy season 8 comic has been so good, I think I would probably enjoy an Angel season 6 comic, too.

  5. It’s not the quality of the writing or artwork that I worry about, since I just assume that will be top-notch. I guess I just don’t want to know what happens next.

  6. I wasn’t sure I’d want to know about Buffy either. I thought that ended perfectly. But Joss had more he wanted to say, a season’s worth, so I figure I should see what it is.

The same is true for Angel. It ended at least a season earlier than he’d planned, from what I’d read and for him, much as he tried to leave it in a good place, it’s unresolved. So I figure, as a fan, I should see what he had in mind had the show continued.

I don’t read the novels or other comics-related stories. But if it’s a missing next season, it’s “official” to me. 🙂
