Well at least it’s not another horror movie:

Sarah Michelle Gellar has joined the cast of TMNT, Warner Brothers’ upcoming computer-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, USA Today reported. She will play April, the human researcher who serves as the Turtles’ tech-services worker and mother figure.

Of course, now I’m confused. Having recently watched the trailer for the movie, I got the impression that it was already finished. Then again, there’s no sign of April in the trailer, so it’s possible that’s still to be added, or that Gellar has come on board to re-voice the character. It’s that, with a proposed release date of March 2007, it seems a little late to just now be joining the cast.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever actually see this movie. I was a fan of the original cartoon — did you know it ran for ten years? I sure didn’t — but I was already fourteen by the time the second live-action movie came out, which is probably the age when wisecracking pizza-eating turtles start to look uncool. (It didn’t help that the first live-action movie was uncool, and pretty lame to boot.) But I have to admit, it really doesn’t look half bad.

  1. Well, it may only be in hindsight that I recognize how lame the live-action movies were. I don’t remember hating the first one when I saw it in theaters or anything. It wasn’t as good as the cartoon — that I do remember.

  2. That’s actually good casting. I could easily see Gellar as April. Is this one live action too, or is it animated? Or live action with CG turtles? And will she wear a yellow jumpsuit covered with pockets?

I remember liking the second film considerably better than the first. The third one was stupid, but fun stupid. (Well, I suppose they were all stupid, but there are varying degrees and qualities of stupid). I don’t know what it says about me that I saw all three.

    Btw, Merry Christmas!

  3. Unless writer/director Kevin Munroe has another directorial debut featuring the Turtles, I think it’s entirely CG-animated. That’s what the trailer shows…but, then again, it doesn’t show April or Casey Jones, and it looks the Patrick Stewart character is voiced by somebody else (if that’s who it is). So it’s anybody’s guess at this point.

I am mostly just glad that Gellar’s not starring in another horror movie. She’s has a few of those still in the pipeline, but it would be nice to see her do something different for awhile. I’ve grown to like her more and more as an actor as I rewatch Buffy episodes.

  4. Yellow jump suit? You haven’t seen her lately. I saw a action figure of her a little while ago. Black pants and a purple top. Nothing says “journalistic integrity” like a bare midrift.
