July Third

I spent today doing mostly what I expected, although I was surprised to discover the local library was closed all weekend, not just tomorrow and Monday. I have a couple of books on reserve, and I guess I won’t get a chance to pick them up until later in the week, if not next weekend.

So I spent the day reading some Kaleidotrope submissions, and just hanging around the house. I also mowed the front lawn, did a little bit of writing, and watched a cute movie called TiMER, starring Emma Caulfield of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame. She and the movie were both quite good; I’m not sure I loved the ending, but it’s sweet and funny and intelligent, which can be rare qualities in a romantic comedy.

Otherwise, just enjoying the long weekend.

Song of the day

Okay, one more Canadian before the big American holiday, and this one’s a more recent favorite. It’s Christine Fellows with “Migrations” off her Paper Anniversary album. I’m a big fan.

Won’t you pick me up? I’m light as a feather.
Though I’m not afraid, I am not brave enough to offer…

Going fourth

It was a long day, in spite or maybe even because I knew the office was closing early in anticipation of the 4th of July holiday. Right now, I’m just looking forward to a relaxing three-day weekend, determined to do nothing more exciting than some reading, some writing, and maybe a movie or two.

Song of the day

Picking up on yesterday’s post, here’s another Canadian singer, though one far different than Leonard Cohen: Stan Rogers, with “Northwest Passage.”

I think I first heard this song on an episode of Due South, years ago. I watched another episode, from earlier in the show’s run, last night*, and that seemed like a good enough excuse to share the song now. I’m not too familiar with Rogers’ work as a whole, although I gather he died much too young, and I know I like this song.

*No reason, just wanted to.
