{"id":5716,"date":"2011-01-04T18:30:34","date_gmt":"2011-01-04T23:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/?p=5716"},"modified":"2011-01-04T16:48:28","modified_gmt":"2011-01-04T21:48:28","slug":"tuesday-various-68","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/?p=5716","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday various"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/shetterly.blogspot.com\/2011\/01\/thought-about-censored-huckleberry-finn.html\">Lots of people<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neatorama.com\/2011\/01\/04\/huckleberry-finn-to-be-published-without-the-n-word\/\">are pointing<\/a> out why <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/industry-news\/publisher-news\/article\/45645-upcoming-newsouth-huck-finn-eliminates-the-n-word.html\">retroactively censoring <i>Huckleberry Finn<\/i> is a bad idea, but I think I like what <a href=\"http:\/\/gerrycanavan.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/04\/quittin-time\/\">Gerry Canavan<\/a> says most:<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>If we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going to retroactively censor Mark Twain, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d say \u00e2\u20ac\u0153slave\u00e2\u20ac\u009d seems significantly more offensive to me than \u00e2\u20ac\u0153n*gger\u00e2\u20ac\u009d insofar as it accedes to the noxious proposition that some people can <em>be<\/em> slaves in the first place. People can be <em>enslaved<\/em>, of course\u00e2\u20ac\u201dbut no person is a slave. In my own rare writing and teaching on slavery I try to favor \u00e2\u20ac\u0153so-called slave\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153enslaved person\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in a quiet effort to highlight that slavery is not an essence but a structure of violent domination.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s not the fact that we&#8217;re still having this conversation that bothers me &#8212; we <i>should<\/i> have continued and open discussions about race &#8212; it&#8217;s that we&#8217;re still faced with people who think <i>not<\/i> discussing it, pretending the words we don&#8217;t like don&#8217;t exist, is the right way to go.<\/li>\n<li>In happier news, <a href=\"http:\/\/journal.neilgaiman.com\/2011\/01\/yes.html\">Nel Gaiman and Amanda Palmer are married<\/a>.
