Michael Straczynski quits writing monthly comics<\/a>, declares future is in original graphic novels. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.warrenellis.com\/?p=11078\">Warren Ellis discusses some of the figures<\/a>, the actual dollar amounts that might be driving Straczynski&#8217;s decision. Financially, it may be a smart decision. But Ellis also adds, not unkindly, the following question:<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>What I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m wondering is what happens the first time Joe writes an OGN that isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t a new iteration of the biggest heritage brand in comics [Superman] with the concomitant press coverage and bookstore push.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s an interesting move on Straczynski&#8217;s part, and it will bear watching &#8212; both in reader reception of his future projects, and whether or not other monthly comics writers join him. But I think it&#8217;s too soon to call this a harbinger of things to come, no matter how troubled the monthly comic book might be as a format.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/articles\/canadas-version-of-jersey-shore-proves-its-no-bett,47490\/?utm_medium=RSS&#038;utm_campaign=feeds&#038;utm_source=channel_tv\">A Canadian <i>Jersey Shore<\/i><\/a>? Can I nominate Red Green to play the role of Snooki?<\/li>\n<li>Attention, writers: whatever you do, do <i>not<\/i> sign a contract <a href=\"http:\/\/whatever.scalzi.com\/2010\/11\/13\/the-man-in-the-frey-flannel-suit\/\">with this man<\/a>. No, not John Scalzi, but that &#8220;prevaricating hustler&#8221; and &#8220;master of bullshit&#8221; James Frey, who Scalzi talks about further <a href=\"http:\/\/whatever.scalzi.com\/2010\/11\/15\/an-open-letter-to-mfa-writing-programs-and-their-students\/\">here<\/a>. Seriously, there are some pretty terrible publishing contracts out there, vanity presses dressed up like real publishers or outright scams from which no book emerges, but <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intel\/2010\/11\/read_the_brutal_contract_from.html\">this is still pretty egregious<\/a> &#8212; and <i>exactly<\/i> the sort of thing MFA programs should be teaching their students how to avoid, not facilitating by offering those students up as Frey&#8217;s misguided recruits.
