That this is a tried and tested method for securing votes is only <i>slightly<\/i> less disheartening than the fact that it seems to be working even today. [<a href=\"http:\/\/gerrycanavan.wordpress.com\/\" title=\"Gerry Canavan\">via<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/rcloenen-ruiz.livejournal.com\/\">Rochita Loenen-Ruiz<\/a>, whose story &#8220;Mouse and I&#8221; appears in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kaleidotrope.net\/?page_id=17#Apr10\">April 2010 issue<\/a> of <i>Kaleidotrope<\/i>, writes <a href=\"http:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/ecstaticdays\/~3\/hQOdHlk-cug\/\">about finding her voice as a Filipino science fiction writer<\/a>:<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>I found myself thinking, yet again, on what kind of science fiction a Filipino would write, and how a writer can break free from being someone who emulates the works of writers he or she has admired to become a person who writes with a voice and with a story that comes from the writer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s own soul.<\/p>\n<p>What things influence the Filipino writer then? How can I as a writer coming from a country that has been so colonialized and that is still trapped in a colonial mindset free myself so I can write the fictions that only I can write?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>She <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jeffvandermeer.com\/2010\/07\/22\/the-danger-of-a-single-story-2\/\">also shares<\/a> a really terrific talk on &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story.html\">The Danger of a Single Story<\/a>&#8221; by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.<\/li>\n<li>Apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/13\/science\/13gravity.html?_r=2&#038;8dpc\">there is no gravity<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/blastr.com\/\" title=\"Blastr\">via<\/a>] and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailygalaxy.com\/my_weblog\/2010\/07\/is-time-disappearing-from-the-universe-radical-theory-says-yes.html\">time is disappearing from the universe<\/a>. [<a href=\"http:\/\/gerrycanavan.wordpress.com\/\" title=\"Gerry Canavan\">via<\/a>] Or at least, those are some theories.<\/li>\n<li>And finally, I don&#8217;t know if <a href=\"http:\/\/blastr.com\/2010\/07\/man-struck-by-5th-meteori.php\">this story<\/a>, about a Bosnian man who claims to have been hit by meteorites six times, is made more or less strange by the possibility that it&#8217;s all a hoax.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rachel Maddow takes on the &#8220;Scare White People&#8221; tactics of the right.
