From <a href=\"http:\/\/lens.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/06\/04\/assignment-35\/\">these <i>New York Times<\/i> photos<\/a> (&#8220;Putting a Face on the Gulf Oil Leak&#8221;) to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifitwasmyhome.com\/\">this Google Maps application<\/a> (&#8220;Visualizing the BP Oil <s>Spill<\/s> Disaster&#8221;) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/\" title=\"Homo Sum\">via<\/a>] to just about every evening&#8217;s news broadcast, it can be incredibly disheartening when faced with the overwhelming scope of the disaster, and the apparent ineptitude of the people in charge of cleaning it up. That&#8217;s why Cherie Priest&#8217;s list of <a href=\"http:\/\/cmpriest.livejournal.com\/1116069.html\">Things you can do about the oil spill<\/a> &#8212; from volunteering to donations to consuming less petroleum overall &#8212; is so important, a welcome reminder that there <i>is<\/i> something we can do.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, in other environmental catastrophes&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.discovery.com\/earth\/dont-call-the-guatemala-sinkhole-a-sinkhole.html\">don&#8217;t call it a sinkhole<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/mersipan\" title=\"@mersipan\">via<\/a>]:<br \/>\n<blockquote><p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Instead, Bonis prefers the term &#8220;piping feature&#8221; &#8212; a decidedly less sexy label for the 100-foot deep, 66-foot wide circular chasm. But it&#8217;s an important distinction, he maintains, because &#8220;sinkholes&#8221; refer to areas where bedrock is solid but has been eaten away by groundwater, forming <a href=\"http:\/\/news.discovery.com\/earth\/florida-limestone-swiss-cheese.html\">a geological Swiss cheese<\/a> whose contours are nearly impossible to predict.<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">The situation beneath the [Guatemala&#8217;s] capital is far different, and more dangerous.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">As if that wasn&#8217;t bad enough, now it turns out children&#8217;s books <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crainsnewyork.com\/article\/20100524\/FREE\/100529924\">are incredibly eco-unfriendly<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookninja.com\" title=\"Bookninja\">via<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>But at least they&#8217;re recycling in Hollywood. And no, I don&#8217;t mean the endless parade of reboots, like this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/articles\/abc-reportedly-considering-alias-reboot,41614\/?utm_medium=RSS&#038;utm_campaign=feeds&#038;utm_source=channel_tv\">wholly misguided <i>Alias<\/i> one<\/a>. (Even though I&#8217;ll be the first to admit the Rambaldi stuff is what eventually did the show in.) I mean this: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slashfilm.com\/2010\/06\/04\/lol-the-reoccurring-prop-newspaper\/\">Every actor reads the same newspaper<\/a>. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.waxy.org\/links\" title=\"Waxy.org Links\">via<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>And finally, if things get too screwed up here on Earth, maybe we can go stay with our neighbors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/topics\/solarsystem\/features\/titan20100603.html\">on Saturn&#8217;s moon Titan<\/a>.
