{"id":3823,"date":"2010-03-17T18:30:42","date_gmt":"2010-03-17T22:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/?p=3823"},"modified":"2010-03-17T18:30:42","modified_gmt":"2010-03-17T22:30:42","slug":"wednesday-various-38","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/?p=3823","title":{"rendered":"Wednesday various"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The very real problem <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/16\/books\/16archive.html?ref=arts&#038;pagewanted=all\" title=\"NY Times: Fending Off Digital Decay, Bit by Bit\">of digital decay<\/a>:<br \/>\n<blockquote><p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Electronically produced drafts, correspondence and editorial comments, sweated over by contemporary poets, novelists and nonfiction authors, are ultimately just a series of digits \u00e2\u20ac\u201d 0\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and 1\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u201d written on floppy disks, CDs and hard drives, all of which degrade much faster than old-fashioned acid-free paper. Even if those storage media do survive, the relentless march of technology can mean that the older equipment and software that can make sense of all those 0\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and 1\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s simply don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t exist anymore.<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Imagine having a record but no record player.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Does this mean the people in my office who print out a copy of <i>everything<\/i> are on to something? <\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">There&#8217;s also the fact that, on a purely aesthetic level, digital archives tend to be pretty boring things. A novelist&#8217;s handwritten notes, for instance, are a lot more interesting to future readers than his half-finished draft in Microsoft Word. I think Emory University&#8217;s archive of Salman Rushdie&#8217;s work &#8212; this &#8220;access through emulation to a born-digital archive&#8221; &#8212; is a neat way to address this fact. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookninja.com\/\" title=\"Bookninja\">via<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>The writer and editor in me liked this: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geist.com\/finding\/sentenced\">Sentenced<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/fedupwithschoollunch.blogspot.com\/\">Fed Up With Lunch: The School Lunch Project<\/a> &#8212; a teacher eats her school&#8217;s cafeteria food every day for lunch, with pictures! [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cynical-c.com\/\" title=\"Cynical-C\">via<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>I don&#8217;t know that being able to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsignal.com\/archives\/2010\/03\/a-girl-who-can-identify-star-wars-figurines-with-her-mouth\">identify <i>Star Wars<\/i> figurines with your mouth<\/a> really makes you much of a <i>fan<\/i> so much as just a really weird kid.
