In a stroke, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve become the sort of scumbag publisher that writer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s organizations warn their members (and their aspiring members) about. But apparently the folks at Harlequin thought that the response would be different with them, because, after all, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re <i>Harlequin<\/i>, and they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re too big to fail.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">He also reports, encouragingly, however, on <a href=\"http:\/\/nielsenhayden.com\/makinglight\/archives\/011896.html\">the reaction of the Romance Writers of America (RWA)<\/a> (as well as the Mystery Writers of America and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America), who have all announced sanctions against Harlequin in response.<\/p>\n<p>Harlequin, of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ereads.com\/richard_curtis\/2009\/11\/harlequin-surprised-and-dismayed-by-rwa.html\">has responded<\/a> with mock surprise, indignation, and a promise of nothing better than a change in the <s>imprint<\/s> scam&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n<p>Why can&#8217;t more Harlequins be like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HGd9qAfpZio&#038;feature=sub\">this<\/a>?<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m glad I wasn&#8217;t the only one who thought Harlequin&#8217;s proposed self-publishing imprint was a very bad idea.
