[<a href=\"http:\/\/gerrycanavan.blogspot.com\/\" title=\"Gerry Canavan\">via<\/a>]<\/li>\n<p><\/font> <font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana\"><\/p>\n<li>Well the odds on <em>The Reader<\/em> winning Best Picture <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/01\/29\/movies\/29arts-ACADEMYALLOW_BRF.html\">just went way up<\/a>. This seems a little underhanded, invoking sympathies for Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack, who passed away last year, but I guess &#8220;fitting tribute&#8221; is another way of seeing it. I have a friend who really loved <em>The Reader<\/em>, but I hear mixed-to-bad things everywhere else.<\/li>\n<p><\/font> <font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana\"><\/p>\n<li>If it&#8217;s not an unnecessary remake, it&#8217;s a prequel. Next up? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvsquad.com\/2009\/01\/15\/how-is-gossip-girl-like-star-trek\/\"><em>Gossip Girl<\/em><\/a>. I&#8217;ve never seen the show, and I don&#8217;t expect to watch this new one, but I do think it will test how far &#8217;80s nostalgia can take you. (Anybody remember <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0305472\/\"><em>That &#8217;80s Show<\/em><\/a>?) Still, as Smitty comments at the first link above: &#8220;It&#8217;s set in LA. It takes place in the late-&#8217;80s\/early-&#8217;90s. The core characters are wealthy teenagers. Will this show be the true heir to 90210&#8217;s tarnished mantle?&#8221; Personally, I always thought <em>90210<\/em> did a heckuva job tarnishing its own mantle, but to each his own.<\/li>\n<p><\/font> <font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana\"><\/p>\n<li>I&#8217;m not really sure what they mean by &#8220;a &#8220;no holds barred&#8221; episode without sets, special effects or autocue.&#8221; But <a href=\"http:\/\/scifiwire.com\/2009\/01\/red-dwarf-finally-returns-to-earthand-to-uk-tv.php\">more <em>Red Dwarf<\/em><\/a>? Count me in.<\/li>\n<p><\/font> <font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana\"><\/p>\n<li>And <a href=\"http:\/\/themiddleblog.livejournal.com\/41612.html\"><em>The Middleman<\/em> on DVD<\/a>! This makes me very happy. A second season would make me happier. I&#8217;m just saying: if the universe is listening, I <em>do<\/em> have a birthday coming up in a couple of months.
