An interesting, if not exactly surprising, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnjosephadams.com\/?p=1689\">talk with the editors<\/a> of <em>F&amp;SF<\/em>, <em>Asimov&#8217;s<\/em>, and <em>Strange Horizons<\/em> about breaking out of the slush pile. The best advice I can offer? At the very least, don&#8217;t make the same mistakes as everybody else. Make more interesting mistakes. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tor.com\/\" title=\"Tor.com\">via<\/a>]<\/li>\n<p><\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana\"><\/p>\n<li>Man, if I knew that was all it cost <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvsquad.com\/2008\/10\/16\/tv-guide-sold-for-a-dollar\/\">to buy <em>TV Guide<\/em><\/a>, I might have ponied up the dollar myself. Then again, as much as I like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/Roush\">Matt Roush<\/a>, I can&#8217;t really feel too sorry for the magazine&#8217;s recent steady slide into irrelevancy.<\/li>\n<p><\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana\"><\/p>\n<li>Think there&#8217;s nothing more terrifying that outfitting police officers with Tasers? Try <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Technology\/story?id=6007823&amp;page=1\">portable pain rays<\/a>. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.warrenellis.com\/?p=6599\" title=\"Warren Ellis\">via<\/a>]<\/li>\n<p><\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana\"><\/p>\n<li>&#8220;We tend to reserve special roles for our favorite writers,&#8221; writes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2201944\/\"><em>Slate<\/em>&#8216;s Christopher Benfey<\/a>, &#8220;\u00e2\u20ac\u201dsepulchral Poe; sardonic Mark Twain; sexy, world-embracing Walt Whitman\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand resist evidence that contradicts our cherished images.&#8221; I&#8217;m reminded of little things, like readers upset when Proust&#8217;s <em>Remembrance of Things Past<\/em> was re-translated as <em>In Search of Lost Time<\/em> &#8212; even though that&#8217;s the correct title in French &#8212; or when the first line of Sartre&#8217;s <em>The Stranger<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/books\/97\/12\/14\/home\/camus-americanized.html\">was &#8220;Americanized&#8221;<\/a> &#8212; even though, again, that translation is probably more accurate. Anyway, turns out Emily Dickinson may not have been the chaste young spinster we imagine her to be.
