Given <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/08\/07\/AR2008080702528.html\">Liz Hand&#8217;s review of the most recent book<\/a>, however &#8212; &#8220;Reader, I hurled.&#8221; &#8212; maybe that&#8217;s not such a good idea. <a href=\"http:\/\/gwendabond.typepad.com\/bondgirl\/2008\/08\/twi-lit.html\">Gwenda Bond has more<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>And then I read <a href=\"http:\/\/news.ansible.co.uk\/a253.html#07\">this in <em>Ansible<\/em><\/a>, where Meyer is quoted as saying of her recent adult novel <em>The Host<\/em>:<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s science fiction because it&#8217;s about aliens, so there&#8217;s no other way to categorize it. And I like science fiction. But this doesn&#8217;t feel to me like science fiction; once you get past the basic premise, it&#8217;s just about being human.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which I realize is just the same old sop to the &#8220;I don&#8217;t usually read science fiction&#8221; crowd, but it still doesn&#8217;t make any sense. You know what we call stories that <em>aren&#8217;t<\/em> in some way about being human? Bad stories.<\/li>\n<li>Going back to <a href=\"http:\/\/gwendabond.typepad.com\/bondgirl\/2008\/08\/twi-lit.html\">Gwenda Bond<\/a> for a second&#8230; In her post, she brings up the &#8217;90s British vampire show <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0169501\/\">Ultraviolet<\/a>. It&#8217;s been awhile since I&#8217;ve seen an episode, but there&#8217;s something that always sort of bugged me a little about the show. They played up the science of vampirism, realism instead of magic, and I think they offered a passable enough reason for why vampires don&#8217;t show up on video cameras. (A modern update of why they don&#8217;t reflect in mirrors.) But that never explained why their <em>clothing<\/em> didn&#8217;t show up.<\/li>\n<li>TV Squad reports that fifteen percent of the world <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvsquad.com\/2008\/08\/11\/fifteen-percent-of-the-world-watched-the-olympics\/\">watched the Olympics opening ceremonies<\/a>. Count me among the world&#8217;s other eighty-five percent. Is it wrong that I don&#8217;t care at <em>all<\/em> about the Olympics?<\/li>\n<li>Can we please ban the term &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=staycation\">staycation<\/a>&#8221; from the modern lexicon now? I&#8217;m just saying.<\/li>\n<li>Have you seen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watchtheguild.com\/\">The Guild<\/a> yet? I think <a href=\"http:\/\/feliciaday.com\/\">Felicia Day<\/a> may be my new favorite person in the whole world.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of Felicia Day (sort of), here&#8217;s a fan project I find equal parts endearing and ridiculous: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.librarything.com\/thingology\/2008\/08\/crowdsourcing-dr-horrible-jeff-atwood.php\">cataloging the books in Dr. Horrible&#8217;s apartment<\/a><\/li>\n<li>And speaking of <a href=\"http:\/\/lifeofreilly.livejournal.com\/597100.html\">Dr. Horrible&#8217;s apartment<\/a>&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I keep meaning to give Stephanie Meyer&#8217;s Twilight series a try.
