{"id":2781,"date":"2007-11-12T12:20:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-12T20:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/?p=2781"},"modified":"2007-11-12T12:20:00","modified_gmt":"2007-11-12T20:20:00","slug":"2781","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/?p=2781","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">In an article in today&#8217;s <i>New York Times<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/11\/12\/business\/media\/12write.html?_r=1&#038;ex=1352610000&#038;en=735207e828822eb5&#038;ei=5088&#038;partner=rssnyt&#038;emc=rss&#038;oref=slogin\">Striking Writers Peddle Words, for Outlets Off the Picket Line<\/a>), Joanne Kaufman neatly sums up what the strike is all about. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The strike,&#8221; she writes, &#8220;[is] over whether producers and studios can profit from the writers&#8217; work on the Web without paying them specifically for it to appear there&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also the increased residuals on DVD sales, but I think the Internet is the real heart of it. Going forward, I think it&#8217;s definitely the more important of the two issues on the table. You can probably make a decent argument for or against residuals &#8212; I think Mark Evanier makes a pretty convincing argument for the set-up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsfromme.com\/archives\/2007_11_05.html#014307\">here<\/a> &#8212; but it&#8217;s ridiculous to claim that they shouldn&#8217;t apply to the internet. It&#8217;s disengenous to say that the shows and movies are just &#8220;promotions&#8221; when they&#8217;re downloaded or watched online.
