{"id":2684,"date":"2007-08-26T10:40:00","date_gmt":"2007-08-26T18:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/?p=2684"},"modified":"2007-08-26T10:40:00","modified_gmt":"2007-08-26T18:40:00","slug":"2684","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/?p=2684","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">In his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/08\/26\/books\/review\/26ames.html?_r=1&#038;oref=slogin\"><i>New York Times<\/i> review<\/a> of Matt Ruff&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/home.att.net\/~storytellers\/badmonkeys.html\"><i>Bad Monkeys<\/i><\/a> &#8212; which is on my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.librarything.com\/catalog\/123fred123\">to-read list<\/a> &#8212; Jonathan Ames makes an interesting point about book reviewing in general:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But I probably only had that thought knowing I was going to write a review and might have to produce clever, negative things to say.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Criticism, when done well, is an important tool and invaluable at opening up a dialogue about the books that we read. But it&#8217;s true that it can sometimes get hung up on things that the average reader, which is to say the reader <i>not<\/i> writing a book review, is perfectly content to let slide or completely miss.<\/p>\n<p>And what&#8217;s with Ames&#8217; &#8220;real quibble&#8221; &#8212; that the acknowledgments are too lengthy and come at the end, instead of the beginning, of the book? Geez.
