Israel, Esq.<\/a> The movie around that performance is less interesting, but it&#8217;s well enough cast and made to be entertaining.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0064855\/\">Putney Swope<\/a> is more a collection of satirical ideas than a movie, with a plot that&#8217;s both simple and convoluted, maybe even a little cluttered by &#8217;60s surrealism. It&#8217;s not uninteresting, but it doesn&#8217;t really hold together and is only occasionally what I&#8217;d call <em>funny<\/em>.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<li>Heath Ledger is good in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0277941\/\">Ned Kelly<\/a>, but everyone, including him, feels a little wasted into this overly quiet, even hushed version of the outlaw&#8217;s story.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt7846844\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/4-2-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"Enola Holmes\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12941\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/4-2-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/4-2-691x1024.jpg 691w, https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/4-2-768x1138.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/4-2.jpg 1012w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0109642\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/5-2-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"Delores Claiborne\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12942\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/5-2-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/5-2.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0383694\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-1-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"Vera Drake\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12943\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-1-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/www.unreality.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt7846844\/\">Enola Holmes<\/a> is charming enough, I guess, although honestly the mystery didn&#8217;t do a whole lot for me.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0109642\">Dolores Claiborne<\/a> feels a little pedestrian and too familiar\u2014it wasn&#8217;t hard to see where it was headed, even having never read the book\u2014but Kathy Bates is good in the title role.<\/li>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<li>Mike Leigh is known for long, improvisational rehearsals through which he and his actors build the characters and narrative. Meaning that there&#8217;s a real lived-in quality to what finally appears on screen, which is what makes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0383694\/\">Vera Drake<\/a> so engaging\u2014along with Imelda Staunton&#8217;s terrific performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I also re-watched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0033467\/\">Citizen Kane<\/a>, which I hadn&#8217;t actually seen since college.
