I slept in a little this morning. Yesterday’s heavy lifting tired me out more than I thought.
This afternoon, I drove over to the Massapequa Preserve, mostly because the weather was nice and I’d never been. And I kind of needed to get out of the house. I had a little trouble finding a spot to park . . . → Read More: Today was allegedly Tuesday

Textbooks Up Their Game. The Wall Street Journal looks at the evolving world of the textbook market and the role that e-book volumes will play in it.
The iPad does seem better suited to the textbook market than most other e-readers, if only for its versatility. But I can’t see app-ready editions of textbooks having much widespread . . . → Read More: Tuesday various

Today was a half day at work, thanks to summer hours, so I of course used the opportunity to finally see Toy Story 3 in theaters. I had a voucher for a free movie ticket from a couple of weeks ago when I saw Inception, and the showtime fit with my schedule this afternoon. It’s probably . . . → Read More: “F.A.O. my Schwartz!”

A quiet Sunday, mostly, spent hanging around the house with the dog and doing the Times crossword. (He’s more into the jumble, actually.) I joined a couple of friends (and a new member, an acquaintance of a friend) for our weekly free-writing group, and I had a couple of photos accepted for inclusion in Small Beer . . . → Read More: A quiet Sunday

First there was work.
Then there was play.
Summer hours are only fun on Fridays, and even then I’m not entirely sure the trade-off is worth it. But there’s definitely something to be said for getting home at two o’clock in the afternoon instead of six or seven o’clock at night.
I’m not sure I used that time . . . → Read More: Ah, Friday

I’ve always thought that competitive eating contests were, at best, disgusting and dumb, and, at worst, encouragers of some really awful and unhealthy behavior. Turns out, it’s much worse than I ever imagined. [via]
Who could have guessed that an H.G. Wells story contest that banned science fiction and required manuscripts be handwritten would get no entries?

I see the dead Tauntaun wedding cake. And I see the zombie wedding cake. But what I don’t see is the obvious next step: the zombie Tauntaun wedding cake. Get on it, cake-makers!
The movie(s) may still disappoint, but I’m genuinely excited by the new Harry Potter trailer.
Martin Scorcese, meanwhile, has never seen the Harry Potter movies. . . . → Read More: Tuesday various

This evening, I took the subway uptown to attend a reading and panel discussion at Columbia University’s Teacher’s College to promote the brand new Neil Gaiman/Al Sarrantonio-edited collection Stories. In attendance were several of the writers from the collection, namely Gaiman himself, Lawrence Block, Walter Mosley, Kat Howard, Joe Hill, Kurt Andersen, and Jeffery Ford. They . . . → Read More: And then what happened…?

I went to sleep last night at a somewhat sensible hour, which is actually kind of rare. Many is the Saturday night that I’ve spent late-night capping, acting snarky towards informercials and Darren McGavin long into the wee hours. It’s all a bit zany — you know, a bit madcap, funster. Frankly I don’t fully understand . . . → Read More: A puzzling Sunday
